About .Mac

Apple’s .Mac offers a wide range of features that help you do more with your Mac.

  • E-mail You get a .Mac e-mail account (your_name@mac.com) and you can manage your e-mail on the Web using the special .Mac e-mail page. You can also use this web interface to download mail from other mail servers.

  • Address Book Using Apple’s iSync, you can synchronize your Address Book contacts between your Mac and your .Mac account on the Web so you can access your Address Book when you use .Mac e-mail over the web on a computer away from home. This lets you always remain up-to-date if you use both ways of sending and receiving e-mail. (See Chapter 15 for more on Address Book.)

  • Bookmarks Just as you can synchronize your Address Book contacts, you can synchronize your Safari bookmarks. If you often access the Internet in a cybercaf , at the office, or at a school, you can use the same bookmarks as you have on your Mac at home.

  • HomePage Create your own web site in minutes using .Mac’s templates. Use this web site to share files, display photos or movies, or publish your r sum . .Mac is integrated with iPhoto, for example, and you can set up a web-based photo album in a jiffy.

  • iDisk You get 100MB of storage space on Apple’s servers (you can purchase more space if you need it) to back up your files or share them with others. Your iDisk is seamlessly integrated into Mac OS X, offering the possibility of creating a local copy and automatically synchronizing it with your online iDisk. It also provides an easy way to download some Apple software, from its Software folder.

  • iCards Send all sorts of electronic postcards to your friends and family.

  • Backup Apple’s Backup, a tool for backing up your files, lets you back up data to your iDisk, to a CD or DVD, or to another hard disk or folder. (See Chapter 22.)

  • iSync Synchronize your data, such as your Address Book contacts and bookmarks, using iSync, so all your Macs can work with the same information. iSync also offers features for working with iPods, Palm PDAs, and cell phones. (See Chapter 15.) You don’t need a .Mac account to use iSync with this kind of device, but you do need one to synchronize files between computers.

  • Virex You get a free copy of McAfee’s Virex anti-virus software, as well as regular updates to the program and its virus definitions. (See Chapter 22.)

  • iCal Use .Mac to share your iCal calendars. (See Chapter 15.)

In addition to these features, .Mac regularly offers its members free software and services, as well as discounts on software, hardware, and other services.
