Chapter 10: Surf the Internet

How to…

  • Set up your Mac for the Internet

  • Use e-mail

  • Surf the web

  • Chat with your friends

For many people today, the main reason to own a computer is to use the Internet. Whether it is to use the Web for school or hobbies, to use e-mail for professional reasons, to keep in touch with family, to buy things online, or to use other services to play games online or share photos and home videos, the Internet is essential to almost all computer users today.

In just a few years, the Internet has gone from a little-known network used by researchers and computer fanatics to an essential tool for work and play. You can buy just about everything over the Internet, you can play games on it with users in other countries, and you can keep in touch with friends and family by e-mail, sending text, pictures, and even videos. You can also chat with people using Apple’s iChat AV, an instant messaging tool, which lets you carry out text, audio, and even video chats.

Macs have long been the easiest computers to connect and configure for the Internet, and today’s Macs are no exception. In this chapter, I’ll show you how to set up your Mac to use the Internet and how to connect to your Internet service provider. I’ll tell you about using e-mail and Apple’s Mail program, about surfing the Web, and about using text, audio, and video chats with Apple’s iChat. If you’re not surfing the Web yet, you will be by the end of this chapter.
