Security, Privacy, and Antivirus Resources

I like to stress security, and I’m going to stay in character here by recommending some good sites for security, privacy, and antivirus information.

CERT (www.cert.org)

Located at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University, the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a reporting house for security incidents and vulnerabilities. CERT is a great place to get facts about new threats or for organizations to report serious security incidents.

CIAC Hoax Busters (http://hoaxbusters.ciac.org)

The U.S. Department of Energy Computer Incident Advisory Capability (CIAC) maintains an informational site about e-mail hoaxes. Hoaxes cause many problems, especially when thousands of people forward them to friends, coworkers, and relatives. Next time you get a virus warning, or great moneymaking offer, check here before you forward the e-mail. You’ll save your friends time, and you won’t contribute to the flood of useless e-mail.

Electronic Frontier Foundation (www.eff.org)

The EFF is a nonprofit organization committed to protecting our right to “think, speak, and share our ideas, thoughts, and needs using new technologies, such as the Internet and the World Wide Web.” The EFF works to protect free speech and privacy rights for all people, visit and support the EFF.

Shields Up!! Gibson Research Corporation (www.grc.com)

The Shields Up!! Internet Security Checkup helps you determine how vulnerable your computer is and tests your firewall software. Created by InfoWorld columnist and programmer Steve Gibson, millions of people have taken advantage of this free tool, and you should, too. You may be surprised at the results you’ll see.

Security Focus (www.securityfocus.com)

Security Focus maintains the Security Focus vulnerability database and the Bugtraq security mailing list. Security Focus is one of the most comprehensive security sites on the Internet, you should check this site often to stay informed of vulnerabilities that affect your computer and other devices.

Spybot Search & Destroy (www.safer-networking.org)

This site has useful software that can detect and remove spyware from your computer. Spyware is software that tracks your surfing habits and reports your private information to advertisers. Spyware also includes malicious applications that record everything you type on your keyboard (including passwords), for someone else to read.

Warchalking (www.warchalking.org)

Warchalking.org is an informational site about the practice of warchalking. It includes a sample of warchalking symbols and the history of warchalking.

Wardrive.net (www.wardrive.net)

Wardrive.net is a great informational site with links to wireless security resources. This is a great place to start, whether you’re securing your WLAN or doing further research.

World Wide WarDrive (www.worldwidewardrive.org)

This is the official site of the World Wide WarDrive. The World Wide WarDrive was organized to generate awareness of the security issues around Wi-Fi access points and to compile statistical data. Participating members include hobbyists and professionals.

www.vmyths.com (www.vmyths.com)

Vmyths.com exists solely for the “eradication of computer virus hysteria” and is run by (actual) virus expert Rob Rosenberger. Vmyths.com provides straight talk about virus threats, dispels myths, and exposes virus hoaxes. Visit this site and get the facts about computer viruses from experts that aren’t affiliated with any anti- virus company.
