Optimizing Equipment

There are ways to tweak the performance of some networking devices such as broadband and satellite modems, but the specifics are unique to each type of device, which makes it impractical to address them within the scope of this book. However, you can find tips specific to your modem and Internet service (DSL, cable, or dial-up) online.

Some Web sites that offer tips to improve the performance of your broadband and wireless devices are:

There are also steps that you can take to improve the performance of your wireless devices and network clients, such as updating drivers and upgrading firmware. Checking for driver and firmware updates is one of the first things you should do when you get your new device home. Chances are that it’s been sitting on a shelf for a while, and during that time the manufacturer has probably made improvements.

Drivers are software modules that enable your operating system to communicate and operate with your device. Firmware is the operating software for a hardware device, and it is located in programmable memory chips within the device. You can flash, or reprogram, these programmable chips (EPROM, ROM, PROM) using update software supplied by the manufacturer.

Manufacturers use firmware updates to extend the useful life of equipment, improve performance, and add new features. One of the best ways to ensure that you get the best performance from your gear is to diligently apply firmware and driver updates as they become available.
