Chapter 19 - Building Windows Applications with the Report Designer Component
Mastering Crystal Reports 9
by Cate McCoy and Gord Maric
Sybex 2003

Building an application that uses Crystal Reports requires working with the different components of the RDC. The RDC consists of Report Viewers, Report Designers, and Automation Server objects. Each of these fulfills a specific task for Crystal Reports, such as designing the report in VB or viewing the report in your application.

The heart of the RDC is the Automation Server, which contains all the objects and collections that represent Crystal Reports. The Application object refers to the Crystal report and allows you to create and open reports. The Report object refers to a Crystal report, and the Database object refers to the data sources the report is using. Using these objects, you can manipulate every aspect of Crystal Reports via code and provide your users a custom application that contains Crystal Reports.

The RDC Automation Server can be used in a VB application as well as in any development environment that supports COM-based objects, such as ASP or Delphi.
