Gardenfors, Peter. Conceptual Spaces: The Geometry of Thought. Cambridge, Mass.: MIT Press, 2000. Professor Gardenfors puts forward the notion that there is a way of modeling knowledge that lies between the high-level symbolic models of AI and the low-level "connectionist" models of neural nets. He calls this modeling approach "conceptual spaces." The proposal is that much of what we reason about can be mapped to geometric positions in a hypothetic space, and the relative distance between items is what creates their "similarity."
