Creating and Deleting Document Presets

A document preset contains custom settings such as the specific width and height, resolution, and color depth of an image. If you find yourself creating the same type of image over and over again, — for instance, you create several CD jewel case covers — you can create your own document preset that automatically creates a new image with the right specifications.

Tip

If you create a custom document that you want to save as a document preset, follow the steps in the preceding section, “Creating a New Image,” and just before Step 9, click the Save Preset button in the New dialog box. The New Document Preset dialog box opens, prompting you to enter a preset name. At this stage, you can select the settings you want saved. For example, you can set the width, height, and resolution. When you’re done, click the OK button to close the New Document Preset dialog box, and click OK to close the New dialog box.

Here’s how to set up a document preset for the CD jewel case cover:

  1. Choose FileNew or press Ctrl+N (z+N on a Mac) to open the New Dialog box.

  2. Enter 4.75 in both the Width and Height text boxes.

  3. Set the Resolution to 300, the Color Mode to RGB, and the bit depth to 16 bit.

  4. Set the Background Contents to White.

  5. Click Save Preset.

  6. Using the New Document Preset dialog box, type a name (such as Jewel Case) in the Preset Name text box.

  7. Click OK to close the New Document Preset dialog box.

Notice that the name you selected in the Preset drop-down list appears in the drop-down list from here on out.

  8. Click OK to close the New dialog box and create a new image based on the document preset you created.

To delete a preset that you don’t need anymore, follow these steps:

  1. Open the New dialog box.

  2. Select the preset you want to delete from the Preset drop-down list box.

  3. Click the Delete Preset button.

A dialog box appears asking whether you’re sure you want to delete the preset.

  4. Click Yes to delete the preset.

  5. To close the New dialog box click OK.
