Blending modes work by changing the light and dark pixels in a layer. The images on these two pages are composed of two layers. The bottom layer contains the woman. The upper layer contains shaded rectangles. The blending modes are applied to the upper layer and affect the pixels on the lower layer. In Color Plate 8-4, the upper layer contains white, gray, and black rectangles. In Color Plate 8-5, the upper layer contains red, yellow, and blue rectangles. Look carefully at the way the lights and darks in each image are affected by the different blending modes.
