Working with Windows

This section is relevant to PC users only. Mac people, skip down to the following section, “Switching between Photoshop and the Finder.” In Photoshop, as in most other Windows programs, you have two kinds of windows: the program window, which contains the main Photoshop work area; and image windows, which contain the images that you create and edit. To see the program window and image window, take a look at Figure 2-3.

Photoshop windows — both program and image — contain the same basic elements as do other Windows program windows. But just in case you need a refresher or you’re new to this whole computing business, here’s how the Photoshop program window works with Windows:

  • Click the Close button in the upper-right corner of the program window to shut down Photoshop. Photoshop prompts you to save open, unsaved images before it lets you exit. (For details on saving images, see Chapter 3.) Another way to shut down Photoshop is to press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Q (as in Quit).

  • Click the Minimize button to reduce the program window to a button on the Windows taskbar. To redisplay the program window, just click the button on the taskbar.

  • The Restore/Maximize button changes depending on the current status of the window. If you see two boxes on the button, as in Figure 2-1, the button is in Restore mode. Click this button to shrink the window in order to see other open program windows. You can resize the window by placing the mouse cursor over a corner or edge of the program window. A double-headed arrow appears, letting you drag the window to resize it. To move the window around, drag the title bar. To restore the Photoshop program window to its former size, just click the Restore/Maximize button.
