Chapter 17: Adding and Manipulating Type

In this part . . .

Chapters 15 through 17 delve into more advanced Photoshop topics. Now that you have the basics under your belt it’s time to move on to the great effects you can create using layer masks, channel masks, and vector masks. Chapter 15 gives full details about all these mask types, and explains how to use them to add texture, hide a portion of a layer, and use a layer as a cutout.

In Chapter 16, I introduce you to the world of vector graphics. Besides being a painting program (and not just any painting program!), Photoshop includes the ability to create vector-based shapes and paths for use in your images. What does this mean for you? Crisp, clean-edged shapes that can add definition to an image, be filled with gradients, and even filled with a history state. Also, you discover how versatile paths are. Paths aren’t just shapes on an image; paths can be transformed into selections, masks, and even filled with type.

A picture may be better than a thousand words, but words — and type — often tell the story. Chapter 17 explains how to work with the world-class typography tools that Photoshop provides. Find out how to use the Character and Paragraph palettes to format type, add color, and even warp type into fantastic shapes. Use a new Photoshop CS feature that allows you to place text on a path. You can draw any path you want, and the type will follow the path’s curves, bumps, and even travel upside down. Cool!
