Chapter 14: Preparing Web Graphics

Overview

The Internet may well be the most chaotic , uncontrolled force ever unleashed on an unwitting public. It has no boundaries, no unifying purpose. Owned by many, but controlled by no one, the Web is incomprehensibly enormous , making the great thoroughfares of the Roman Empire look like a paperboy's route. With many millions of people involved, either as users, developers, or both, the Web is very hard to explain, define, or sometimes, understand. That may sound like a wild exaggeration, but it's not, when you think about it. And anyway, exaggeration is what the Web is all about. After all, this is the force that gave us the world's biggest bookstore and the largest, most accessible auction house. It was responsible for an economic boom and a subsequent economic bust. It can be fashionable to knock the Web, yet we're using it in bigger numbers today than ever, and its reach is increasing and will continue to do so, probably indefinitely. A friend once said, "Ah, the Internet ” it'll be like CB radio ” the novelty will wear off." Boy, was he wrong.

So. What does all that mean to a Photoshop user ? Bitmapped graphics rule the Web. Sure, the audio and video content is cooler , and text-based content, databases, and hyperlinks are the main stock in trade of the Internet, but the graphics are what make the Web intelligible and invite us to come back for more. Graphics have brought the masses to the Web, images account for the vast majority of all Web graphics, and Photoshop is the world's number one image editor. As a result, Photoshop has become as inextricably linked to the Web as Internet Explorer, Macromedia Flash, QuickTime, and a hundred other programs.
