Exchange Server ActiveSync

With previous versions of Exchange, users had to install and configure MIS to enable wireless access to Exchange information. With this release, the functionality that was previously exposed through MIS is now incorporated into Exchange, allowing users to synchronize information between an Exchange server and a wireless device running Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition.

By default, the Exchange Server ActiveSync components are installed so that all you need to do is enable this functionality using the options shown in Figure 10.13.

This functionality works in two ways. If you are working with a commercial carrier (such as AT&T or Verizon) that offers this service and has the corresponding Exchange Server components installed, you can configure ActiveSync to use that carrier's SMTP servers to perform the synchronization. If you don't have a carrier or would prefer not to specify a carrier, you can turn on that option as well.

CONFIGURING ACTIVESYNC

Whether you are looking for a fully functional email client, access to your Exchange Mailbox from the Web, a wireless device, or just about anything else in between, Exchange Server 2003 has what you need.
