Acknowledgments

The idea for this book was born over dinner at Lupo restaurant at the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas on May 6, 2002. However, the book would never have been finished without the steady encouragement of the staff at Prentice Hall, especially Mary Franz. There is no amount of gratitude that I can express for her seemingly infinite patience with my slow pace of writing. But that's all behind us now!

I'd also especially like to acknowledge the members of IEEE 802.11's Task Group "i" for being so welcoming. In particular, I would like to thank Nancy Cam-Winget, Frank Ciotti, Clint Chaplin, Dave Halasz, Russ Housley, DJ Johnston, Tim Moore, Mike Moreton, Bob Moskowitz, Dorothy Stanley, and Jesse Walker, among many others from within the broader context of IEEE 802.11, including (among others) Duncan Kitchin and Matthew Shoemake. It has been a pleasure to work with all of you, including some of you for whom I only know your first name.

It should be understood that any errors in this book are my own. I have done my best to faithfully describe the pieces of the standard, and the emerging extensions of the standard. It's possible that I have faithfully reproduced something that was incorrect in the first place, and if so, shame on me.

During the course of writing this book, I have found and reported several bugs in emerging IEEE draft standard documents; if I missed one, I apologize for not catching it. It is far more likely that any other mistakes you might find are mine, and if you care to, you can send me email at <tmaufer@acm.org> with suggestions for improvements.
