9.6 Conclusion

This chapter explored some new and upcoming technologies in the Web services area. The chapter briefly discussed Web services standards and the J2EE APIs that enable Java applications to use those standards and introduced the new features of the Enterprise JavaBeans architecture that pertain to Web services and that have been developed as part of the EJB 2.1 specification. These new features allow an enterprise bean to be used as the endpoint for a Web service, thus leveraging all the power and ease of use of the EJB architecture toward developing Web services.

The chapter also explored how an enterprise bean could use the JAX-RPC APIs to access a Web service based on a WSDL description of the service. Finally, the chapter presented an overview of document-oriented styles of interactions in Web services. Many of the new concepts were brought together with two example applications that used the new Web services features of the EJB and J2EE architectures.
