6.5 Conclusion

This chapter presented a brief overview of the communication mechanisms used by J2EE applications, particularly focusing on asynchronous messaging and JMS. These technologies form the foundation for understanding message-driven beans. The chapter introduced and described the basic concepts of message-driven beans. The chapter included sections on how developers can implement and use message-driven beans in their applications. This discussion illustrated how J2EE applications can use message-driven beans to simplify using the JMS API and to facilitate receiving messages asynchronously.

To illustrate how to use asynchronous messaging and message-driven beans effectively, the Benefits Enrollment application was changed in this chapter to show how to use a message-driven bean instead of a session bean to handle payroll updates. Using a message-driven bean facilitated a looser coupling between the Benefits Enrollment and payroll applications.

The chapter also discussed how an EJB application can use the J2EE Connector technology to integrate with enterprise information systems. The next chapter begins the discussion of entity beans.
