You can display documents you previously saved on-screen. When you open a document, you can make changes to it.
Click File.
Click Open.
The Open dialog box appears.
Click the Look in to navigate to the folder containing the document you want to open.
You can double-click a folder to see the documents in it.
You can click these buttons to navigate to common file locations.
Click the document you want to open.
Click Open.
The document appears on-screen.
Are there other ways to open a document?
Yes. Recently used documents appear in the Getting Started task pane and at the bottom of the File menu. You also can click the More icon in the Getting Started task pane or the Open button () on the Standard toolbar to display the Open dialog box shown in this section.
Click File.

Alternatively, you can click a document in the Getting Started task pane to open it.
You can open documents created by colleagues using several other word processing programs besides Word.
Click File.
Click Open.
The Open dialog box appears.

The Convert File dialog box appears.
Select the program that created the file.
Click OK.
Word opens the file.
I set my Save options to create a backup copy. How do I open the backup copy?

Click the Files of type and click All Files.
Click the arrow portion of and click .
Select the document.
In the Name column, the file name appears as “Backup of” the original document.
In the Type column, “Microsoft Word Backup Document” appears.
Click Open.
