PHASE THREE: INNOVATION

During the innovation phase of the Web services adoption model, organizations will devise new ways of doing business enabled through the use of Web services. The innovation phase will require use of the full complement of Web services standards, spanning the spectrum of the identified enabling, evolving, and emerging standards. Specifically, standards and capabilities that support Web services security, management, asynchronous transactions, and process orchestration will become increasingly important. During this phase organizations will leverage what has been learned from internal integration projects and from collaboration projects with customers, partners, and suppliers. These organizations will rely on their experience and knowledge base to develop new business opportunities and sources of competitive advantage. These organizations will use Web services as an innovation platform to drive new levels of business performance, or fundamentally change the dynamics of the markets they operate in.

Two key categories of organizations will emerge as the leaders during the innovation phase:

  1. Early Adopters —Those organizations that were early adopters during the integration and collaboration phase will be among the first to truly grasp the innovation potential of Web services.

  2. New Entrants —Any disruptive technology creates the potential for significant shifts in market dynamics, and the emergence of Web services will be no exception. Consider how Dell Computer forever changed the landscape of the personal computer (PC) market place by mastering the direct channel sales model. In just over fifteen years Dell was able to evolve from a garage business to the number one PC manufacturer in the world.

Expect to see the first signs of truly innovative Web services usage in late 2003, to early 2004. Usage of Web services to drive innovation will continue to disrupt markets for several years as new opportunities to drive competitive advantage or change market dynamics are discovered.
