Part6.ADVANCED TOPICS

We're rounding the final turn and coming into the home stretch. In this section, I address topics that will be important to you as you hone your software development management skills. For example, every good manager sooner or later is asked to take over an in-progress project that is in trouble.

Chapter 21, "Crisis," allegorically deals with jumping into the middle of the mess and getting on the road to recovery.

In Chapter 22, "Growth," I address the issues that crop up when you are asked to grow your organization. Perhaps you have just come off a successful project, and your boss wants you to take on a bigger one. Can you increase the size of your team and still be effective?

As you begin to manage enterprises that are larger than a single project, your thoughts will turn to what kind of organization you want to build. Chapter 23, "Culture," tackles the issues of culture and values, those intangibles that govern from on high and create the environment in which all the teams must function.

Finally, Chapter 24, "Putting It All Together," closes out the book with a philosophical piece on the very nature of people as they move through their careers.
