What Is a GIS?

Summary

Mobile information management (MIM) comprises both personal information management (PIM) and mobile device management (MDM). PIM applications can add tremendous value to remote workers, while MDM capabilities are important for system administrators. Currently, most PIM and MDM offerings come from different vendors, but the trend is for these solutions to be provided by a single vendor. All of the mobile operating systems include some level of PIM support for individual users. Several vendors produce complete mobile PIM solutions, for those who require integration with enterprise groupware products. For mobile device management, vendor platforms provide many features for software distribution, asset management, remote administration, and backup and recovery. Using a device management solution can dramatically reduce the administration costs for remote users.

In the next chapter we will learn about location-based services, an exciting technology that looks to revitalize the market for both consumer and corporate mobile applications.
