Summary

In this chapter, we looked at some best-practice techniques for configuring Cisco routers and switches for network management by providing concrete configuration examples. Specifically, we addressed recommendations for the following:

  • Setting up Telnet access to the devices

  • Configuring the Loopback interface on the router

  • Configuring NTP

  • Configuring SNMP on the devices for handling SNMP requests as well as SNMP traps

  • Setting up logging

  • Setting up RMON on the switches

  • Setting up CDP

  • Setting up SPAN on the switches

We feel that if you use these configuration steps as guidelines for your network, maintaining and supporting the network will be much easier.
