Notes and Further Reading

A comprehensive treatment of using discrete time in the context of CSP may be found in Roscoe’s book (1998). We have adapted the approach presented there to fit with the modeling tools and techniques used in this book. However, our approach is essentially the same and much credit is due to Roscoe for providing the first generally accessible introduction to this style of modeling time.

It was explicitly stated in the introduction that the timed systems we deal with are not real-time in the sense of guaranteeing deadlines. The interested reader will find that there is a vast literature on the specification, verification and analysis of real-time systems. A good starting point is a book edited by Mathai Joseph which presents a number of techniques with respect to the same case study (1996). One of the techniques presented is Timed CSP, which uses a dense continuous model of time in contrast to the discrete model we present. Continuous time is more expressive but leads to difficulties in automated analysis.
