Lesson 1: Overview of Services for UNIX

To connect a computer running Windows 2000 Professional to UNIX computers, you need protocols and services that allow the two networking systems to communicate with each other. Windows 2000 Professional uses the Common Internet File System (CIFS) protocol for file and print services. CIFS is an enhanced version of the Microsoft Server Message Block (SMB) protocol. UNIX, however, uses the Network File System (NFS) protocol for file services and, for print services, uses Line Printer (LPR)/Line Printer Daemon (LPD) or personal computer network file system daemon (PCNFSD).

After this lesson, you will be able to

  • List the hardware requirements to use SFU
  • Identify the system requirements for specified SFU components

Estimated lesson time: 10 minutes

System Requirements

Services for UNIX 2.0 implements a subset of Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) network protocols that enables interoperability of Windows 2000 Professional and UNIX. Services for UNIX 2.0 provides a set of additional features to Windows NT and Windows 2000 that allow for greater interoperability with existing UNIX servers in the enterprise.

Services for UNIX 2.0 is made up of multiple components that allow you to interoperate Windows 2000 Professional and UNIX in the way that best fits your environment.

To use Services for UNIX 2.0, you need:

  • A computer with 60 megabytes (MB) of available hard disk space and 16 MB of RAM running on top of the recommended configuration of Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Windows NT Workstation 4.0, Windows NT Server 4.0, and Windows NT Server Enterprise Edition 4.0 (SP4 and above) operating systems. (Windows Services for UNIX version 2.0 does not run on Windows 95 or Windows 98, and currently does not support "clustering.")
  • Services for UNIX version 2.0 supports Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition (SP4 and above), and Terminal Services in Windows 2000 Server and Windows 2000 Advanced Server.
  • A CD-ROM drive.
  • Appropriate Ethernet, Token Ring, or FDDI network adapter.

See your reseller for a list of Windows NT- and Windows 2000-compatible systems and peripherals. Windows NT Server 4.0 and Windows 2000 Server Client Access Licenses are sold separately.

System Requirement Component Details

The following table shows system requirements for each component of Windows Services for UNIX version 2.0.

System Requirements for SFU Components

Component Required system configuration
Windows NT Workstation 4.0 (Service Pack 4 or later) Windows NT Server 4.0 (Service Pack 4 or later) Windows 2000 Professional Windows 2000 Server
Client for NFS X X X X
Server for NFS X X X X
Gateway for NFS X X
Server for PCNFS X X X X
Server for NIS X
User Name Mapping X X X X
Password Synchronization X X
Telnet Client X X X X
Telnet Server X X X X
Server for NFS Authentication X X
Remote Shell Service X X X X
CRON Service X X X X
ActivePerl X X X X
UNIX Shell and Utilities X X X X

Additional Requirements

  • Client for NFS and Gateway for NFS cannot be installed on the same computer.
  • For domain passwords, Password Synchronization must be installed on a Windows domain controller.
  • Server for NIS must be installed on a Windows 2000 domain controller.
  • Server for NFS users can be authenticated using server (local) accounts or Windows domain accounts. If users are authenticated using local accounts, Server for NFS Authentication must be installed on the server running Server for NFS. If users are authenticated using domain accounts, Server for NFS Authentication must be installed on all primary and backup domain controllers in the domain.

Lesson Summary

SFU may be installed on Windows NT 4 or Windows 2000. However not all components will work on all systems. You need to determine what components you need before you can determine what hardware and software you will need to install SFU. This lesson explained the various hardware and software requirements for the different UNIX components.
