Customizing Text

Aperture applied some placeholder titles when we created the web journal, but they're completely customizable. Let's edit the existing text as well as add new text.

1.

Click the "YOUR SITE TITLE" text and replace it by typing PROPOSED LOCATIONS.

2.

Replace the "Your site subtitle" text with Grande Agency/Luna Studio.

3.

Replace the "Your document copyright here" text with © Orlando Luna.

That was easy. This header, subtitle, and copyright text will appear on all of the site's index pages.

Tip

You can define web copyright info in Aperture Preferences. Aperture will automatically fill in the Preferences web copyright data to all newly created web galleries and web journals.

Aperture displays caption information under the images. Since there is no caption metadata, let's add some now. Instead of manually writing a caption for each image, however, we can automate the process by using the Batch Change feature.

4.

Click the Show All Images button, then press V to hide the Webpage Editor and enlarge the Browser.

5.

Select all of the Uruguay images, which all begin with DSC.

6.

Choose Metadata > Batch Change.

The Batch Change dialog appears.

7.

Choose Add Metadata From > Caption Only.

8.

In the Caption field, type Colonia June 2005 and then press Tab.

9.

Click OK to apply the caption to all of the selected images.

10.

Repeat steps 5 through 9 for the Jackson Hole and South Beach images, selecting them in turn and specifying a caption of Jackson Hole Sept 2005 and South Beach Dec 2005, respectively. Then press V to return to the Webpage Editor.

Make sure Caption is chosen in the Metadata Set pop-up menu. The captions you entered using the Batch Change command are displayed under each image.

11.

Click to select the Colonia page in the Journal Pages panel.

The captions are identical for all of the Colonia images; they need to be customized so that the client can reference specific images.

12.

Select Enable Plate Metadata from the Metadata Set pop-up menu.

Aperture adds an image number caption to each thumbnail.

13.

Click to select Page 1 in the Journal Pages panel.

The index pages now contain a custom header and captions. You will add some text to the main index page in a minute, but let's quickly customize the text on the image detail pages first. A detail page appears whenever a user clicks on a thumbnail on an index page.

14.

Click Detail Page 1 in the Detail Images panel, in the lower left corner of the Webpage Editor. If necessary, use the arrow buttons on the right side of the Detail Page panel to navigate to Detail Page 1.

The first image in the journal and the image-capture metadata appear in the preview area. The clients don't need to know the lens aperture, camera shutter speed, and other capture information for the image, however; they do need to see the caption and image number.

15.

Choose Caption Only from the Metadata Set pop-up menu.

Now, only the Caption metadata that we edited earlier in this exercise will appear on all of the image detail pages.

16.

Select Page 1 in the Journal Pages panel.

Excellent. The next task is to add text about the different locations. To do that, we need to create text boxes.
