Creating Multiple Libraries

If the disk that contains your Aperture Library becomes full, then you won't be able to add images to it. At this point you have several options:

  • You can delete images from your Library to free up more space.

  • You can delete other files from your disk to free up more space.

  • You can install a bigger hard disk and copy the contents of your old disk to it.

  • You can move your Library to an external disk drive, as described in the previous exercise.

  • If you're working on a tower system that has room for an additional internal disk drive, then you can install a second internal drive and move your Library there.

  • You can leave your Library as-is and create an additional Library on another disk.

This last option, creating multiple Libraries, allows you to spread your image collection over several driveseven drives that are not currently connected to your computer.

In Aperture you can view only one Library at a time, so you won't have access to the pictures in any of your alternative Libraries, but if you create Libraries for specific subjects, this won't be such an issue.

As in the previous exercise, you use Aperture's Preferences to create multiple Libraries.

1.

Choose Aperture > Preferences, or press Command-, (comma).

2.

In the Preferences dialog, define a new Library location (ideally, on another drive).

3.

Quit Aperture and then open it again. When the program reopens, it will create a new, empty Library at the new location. Now you have a second Library and any images that you add will be imported into this new Library.

If you want to change back to your previous Library, reset the Library Location preference to your original Library, and then quit and reopen Aperture.

You can repeat this procedure as many times as you want to create as many Libraries as you need. You'll simply have to reopen Aperture after each preference change.
