Although most Macromedia Dreamweaver designers are not trained to be system administrators, they might wish they were if they become Macromedia Contribute administrators. Similarly, information technology (IT) personnel in larger organizations who are newly tasked with Contribute administration will find themselves dealing with Web pages more intimately than ever before. Administering Contribute requires you to be familiar with the full range of job responsibilities (what needs to be done) and a degree of the technical know-how (how to do it).

Although much of the sitewide administration can be handled from within Contribute, some must be addressed on the network or Web server level. Even if you're not ultimately responsible for implementing needed changes, knowing how the key components work together with Contribute will help you communicate your needs knowledgeably. This lesson provides a roadmap that the Contribute administrator can use to implement the desired sitewide settings, both from within Contribute and in the larger network environment.

Track all the activity on your Contribute-enabled site through the Contribute Publishing Services site log feature.

Contribute Publishing Services (CPS), introduced in Lesson 10, is a major boon to Contribute administrators. Lesson 11 explores the many advantages offered by the CPS User Directory service; one key advantage is the enhancement of Contribute's approval service. Although you don't need to have Contribute Publishing Services installed to implement the approval process, CPS is instrumental in making Contribute viable for medium to large organizations, and CPS is required to gather and use the information available through Contribute's log. You'll learn in this lesson how to make the most of both the approval system and the administrator's log.
