Formatting Slide Text


Generally speaking, it's a good idea to maintain formatting consistency on all slides. However, sometimes you may want to emphasize a word or group of words by using boldface, italics, color, a larger or smaller size, or a different font.

Working with the Formatting Toolbar

  1. Select the text that you want to format. The text will be highlighted.

  2. Click on a Formatting toolbar button. The text will be formatted in the style you've selected.

Here are a few formatting styles that you may want to apply to text:

Copying Text Formatting

You can also copy the formatting of text and apply it to other text in a presentation slide:

  1. Select the text that is formatted in the style you want to apply to the other text.

  2. Click on the Format Painter button on the Standard toolbar. The mouse pointer will turn into a paintbrush.

  3. Select the text to which you want to apply the formatting. The formatting will be copied.

Tip 

To apply the copied formatting to more than one text element, doubleclick in step 2. Then press Esc after step 3 to return to normal mode.

Selecting a Different Bullet Character

The default bullet character depends on the design template you've chosen. You can select a different bullet character without changing the design template.

  1. Select the paragraphs to which you want to apply a different bullet character. The paragraphs will be selected.

  2. Click on Format. The Format menu will appear.

  3. Click on Bullets and Numbering. The Bullets and Numbering dialog box will open.

    1. Click on the bullet character that you want to use for the bullet list. The bullet will be selected. Then skip to step 10.

    OR

    1. Click on Customize. The Symbol dialog box will open.

  4. Click on the Font box's down arrow and choose a different font if desired. The characters in the font will appear.

    Tip 

    Wingdings is a good font for selecting bullet characters.

  5. Click on the character you want for the bullets. It will be selected.

  6. Click on OK. The Symbol dialog box will close.

  7. Click the Size up and down arrows to select how large or small the bullet will be, compared to the text. The percentage you choose will appear in the list box.

  8. Click the Color down arrow and select a color from the list. The color that appears in the list box will be applied to the bullet character.

  9. Click on OK. The bullet character and color will be applied to all the bullet points in the placeholder.

Selecting a Picture Bullet

In addition to the standard bullet types in the preceding steps, you can choose from a variety of pictures for bullets.

  1. Select the paragraphs to which you want to apply a different bullet character. The paragraphs will be selected.

  2. Click on Format. The Format menu will appear.

  3. Click on Bullets and Numbering. The Bullets and Numbering dialog box will open.

  4. Click on Picture. The Picture Bullet dialog box will open.

    Note 

    You will have many more bullet choices if you are connected to the Internet.

  5. Click on the bullet character you want to use.

  6. Click on OK. The new bullet will be applied.
