Creating Hyperlinks

Tip

Perhaps the easiest way to create a hyperlink to a Web site or e-mail address is simply to type its address in any text box. Then press Enter or the spacebar, and PowerPoint converts it into a working hyperlink automatically.

A hyperlink is a link from one location or document to another. When the user clicks a hyperlink, the destination document appears. You are probably familiar with hyperlinks on Web pages from using the Internet. You can also create hyperlinks on PowerPoint slides. These hyperlinks can point to other slides in the presentation, to e-mail addresses, or to other files stored anywhere on a network or on the Internet.

A hyperlink can be attached to any object, including any amount of text or a graphic object. For example, the user could click on underlined text as a hyperlink, or click on a graphic that is a hyperlink.

Hyperlinking to Another Slide in the Presentation

You would not normally hyperlink from one slide to the next one, because simply clicking the mouse will move to the next slide. However, you might hyperlink in order to jump around in the order (for example, to skip a certain set of slides), or to jump to a hidden slide.

  1. Select the text or graphic that you want to use as the hyperlink. The text or graphic will be selected.

  2. Click on the Insert Hyperlink button. The Insert Hyperlink dialog box will open.

  3. Click on Place in This Document in the Link to list. A list of slides found in the presentation will appear in the center of the dialog box.

  4. Click on the slide in the Select a place in this document list box that you want to appear when a visitor clicks on the hyperlink. The slide will be selected, and a preview of the slide will appear in the Slide preview box.

  5. Click on OK. The hyperlink will be created.

A hyperlink to a Web site will open a Web browser when the user clicks on it, taking the user away from your PowerPoint presentation.

Creating an E-Mail Hyperlink

To give your audience an easy way to contact you, place an e- mail hyperlink on one of the slides. When people click on the e-mail hyperlink, a new message window will open from their default e-mail program. Your e-mail address (or any other address you specify) will appear in the To field. They just need to type a message and send it to you.
