Save Internet Content for Later Use

Task #85

Difficulty Level 2

As you surf the Web, you will sometimes run into something that you want to save for later use. You may see a cool desktop image that you want to use for your own desktop or a movie trailer that you want to show a family member who is not at home.

All content that appears on a Web page is actually a file somewhere on your hard drive. The browser downloaded it to your computer so that you could view it. This means that all the content is also available for you to use later.

With Safari, you can save images, movies, and more in a number of different manners, such as downloading, copying, saving, and dragging files. None of these is a big surprise for proficient Mac users, but they may not all occur to you.

Apply It

To save QuickTime movies in Safari, click the triangle icon in the movie controller and choose Save As Source from the menu. The standard Save As dialog box appears, giving you the opportunity to save the movie on your hard drive. This does not work for all QuickTime movies, however, because some content is protected for copyright reasons by the author. In those instances, Save As Source will be dimmed.

Apply It

After you copy an image to the Clipboard in Safari, open the Preview application. Click File → New from Pasteboard to create a new image from the image on the Clipboard. After you have created a new image in Preview, you can export it to one of a dozen different formats.
