Use Spring-Loaded Folders To Reduce Clutter

Task #13

Difficulty Level 2

To move a file or folder between two locations usually means that you have to be able to see both locations — the origin of the file or folder and the destination to which you want to move it. This tends to clutter the desktop quickly, particularly if you want to move more than one file or folder.

Spring-loaded folders help alleviate this problem. To move a file using spring-loaded folders, simply drag the file onto a folder, but do not let go of the mouse button. After a brief pause, the folder will pop open, displaying its contents. You can continue to navigate this way as long as you continue to press the mouse button. When you arrive at the destination that you want, let go of the mouse button, and the file moves to the destination folder.

You can adjust the amount of time that you have to wait until spring-loaded folders open in the Finder Preferences dialog box. You can also remove the wait altogether by pressing the spacebar as soon as you drag an icon to a folder.
