Chapter 2: Managing Files and Folders

Overview

The Finder has always been one of the most important aspects of the Mac OS. After all, this one often-copied feature set the Mac apart from its competition back in the early days of the personal computer. Panther continues in this tradition with many new Finder features that help make your file management much quicker and easier.

Some of the Finder improvements in Panther are updates to previous features; some are completely new features. Yet others are features that used to be in the Mac OS, but then disappeared, only to reappear in Panther.

For starters, the Finder has been totally revamped for Mac OS 10.3. The first thing that you will notice is that Finder windows are metal in Panther, not the pinstripe look of Jaguar and earlier. Aesthetic issues aside, Finder windows have lots of new functionality. Every Finder window has a Places sidebar that gives you extraordinarily speedy access to nearly any location on your hard drive.

You can search for and locate files directly in Finder windows. Not only is this convenient in Panther, but it is also tremendously fast. To help you further organize your files, Panther reintroduces color labels and gives a much-needed facelift to the standard Open and Save dialog boxes.
