Deleting a List

It is important to know how to get rid of an obsolescent list or perhaps one created in error. Unlike the previous release, deleting a list only marks it as being removed. It doesn’t permanently remove the list from the database, and all the list items contained within it, even though no longer visible, are safely retained inside the list in the site’s Recycle Bin.

That said, the buyers at Wide World Importers are happy with their new Common Buyer Tasks task list and no longer need the Tasks task list that was created when the site was originally provisioned. In this exercise, you will delete the surplus list.

OPEN the SharePoint site where the Common Buyer Tasks list was created. The exercise will use the http://wideworldimporters site, but you can use whatever site you wish. If prompted, type your user name and password, and click OK.

BE SURE TO verify that you have sufficient rights to delete the list. If in doubt, see the Appendix on page 435.

1. On the Quick Launch, click Tasks to display the Tasks default list view page.

2. On the Settings menu, choose List Settings to display the Customize Tasks page.

3. In the Permissions and Management area, click Delete this list. The Are you sure you want to send this list to the site Recycle Bin? dialog box is displayed.

4. Click OK to confirm the deletion.

The All Site Content page is displayed. The list is longer shown on the All Site Content page or the Quick Launch.

5. At the bottom of the Quick Launch, click the Recycle Bin link. The deleted list is shown. You can now restore the list if you wish to do so.

CLOSE the browser.
