Modifying Sherlock Channels

The default channels (Internet, Pictures, Stocks, Movies, Yellow Pages, eBay, Flights, Dictionary, Translation, and AppleCare) may be all you need, but if not, you can add to and reorganize these 10 channels. You can add new channels for Internet search sites, and you can delete the channels you add. You can customize the look of the Sherlock toolbar and adjust the Sherlock Preferences.

Note

Sherlock repairs and updates its standard Internet channels periodically, and in so doing could undo changes you have made to the configuration of the standard channels. Every time you open Sherlock, it verifies that each standard channel exists and has its standard search sites. If channels or search sites are missing, it restores them from the Internet. In addition, Sherlock periodically checks the Internet for newer versions of standard search sites and channels, and it automatically updates your system as needed. If you move search sites out of a standard channel or remove a standard channel altogether, Sherlock’s automatic update and repair mechanisms will eventually restore the standard search sites and channels you moved or removed.

Adding a channel to Sherlock

When you find a Web site with a Sherlock 3.6 and above–compatible channel, click the link on the Web site for the channel, and the new channel should appear in the Sherlock toolbar.

Deleting a channel

If you want to delete a channel, choose View Customize Toolbar to show the customizing toolbar pane. Click the channel you want to remove from the toolbar and drag it into the customizing pane. The channel icon will vanish in a small puff of smoke. Figure 7-28 shows the Customize Toolbar sheet.

Rearranging and replacing channels

The channel buttons at the top of the Sherlock window are not permanently fixed in their initial positions. You can move them around, and you can replace one channel with another.

To move a channel button, simply open the Customize Toolbar and drag a channel icon to the right or left in the toolbar until it is where you want it to be, then release it. The other icons will reorder themselves to fit the space.

Editing cookies preferences

Sherlock’s channels sometimes make use of cookies, which in this case are small text files that are automatically sent to your Mac by the Web server used by the channel. Cookies, which are also used with standard Web browsers, contain information that identifies you to the Web site, such as your name, passwords, preferences, and so on.

Most of the time, cookies are harmless. They are often convenient, ensuring that you do not need to reenter this information whenever you use the Channel or site. However, since they can also be used to track your online activities and otherwise violate your privacy, a good modern Web browser gives you the ability to turn them on or off, to review a list of cookies on your computer, and to delete the ones you don’t want or no longer need. And of course, Sherlock belongs to the club of good modern Web browsers.

To set cookies preferences for Sherlock, follow these steps:

  1. Open Sherlock if it hasn’t been opened already.

  2. Choose File Preferences to open the Sherlock Preferences window. It should initially appear with the Accept Cookies Always radio button selected, as shown in Figure 7-29.

  3. Click on the Show Cookies button to see a list of the cookies Sherlock has accepted, or were preloaded to accompany the included channels, as shown in Figure 7-30.

Figure 7-30: You can view a list of the cookies Sherlock uses and delete whichever ones you wish.

  4. Click a cookie in the list to enable the Remove button; click the button to remove the cookie. You may also click the Remove All button to delete all the cookies. Or, if you wish to make no changes, click Done.
