Labels

Labels are a tool used to color-code various items on a user’s hard drive. Items have no label applied by default. To apply a label, single-click on an item to select it, then open the File menu, and select the desired label color from the list at the bottom of the menu. To be more individually tailored, labels can be renamed according to priority, or named for particular clients. This is done in the Finder preferences window, as described earlier in this Chapter. Applying the priority or client named label to a file marks it visually for quick recognition. Figure 4-19 shows the File menu.

In icon view, a colored border will surround a labeled item’s name. The items almost look as if they are selected (as selecting an item also surrounds the name with a color). The key difference to note is that selected item’s actual icons are also highlighted with a gray box, as shown in Figure 4-20. When selecting an item that is labeled, the label color still remains as a slight border around the selection color.

In list view, a labeled item’s entire line will be surrounded with the colored border. Turn on the label column in the List View Options to enable sorting by label color (as described in Chapter 3). Figure 4-21 shows the list view with three different label colors applied to different items.
