Summary

Here’s what you know about setting up networks after reading this Chapter:

  • Setting up a network makes it possible for your computers to share an Internet connection, share printers, share files, participate in multiplayer games, and use other multiuser software.

  • Wiring an Ethernet network involves running a twisted-pair cable from each computer and other network device to a hub or switch.

  • Establishing an AirPort wireless network involves installing an AirPort card in each computer. Then you can create a computer-to-computer wireless network. An AirPort base station is optional, but allows AirPort-equipped computers to share an Internet connection and to communicate with computers on a wired Ethernet network, if you also have one of these.

  • After making a network connection — Ethernet, AirPort, or modem — you may need to configure some settings in the Network pane of System Preferences. You configure settings for each network connection separately. Each network connection has several groups of related settings, and you switch between groups by clicking tabs in Network preferences. The tabs include AirPort, TCP/IP, AppleTalk, PPPoE, Proxies, PPP, and Modem.

  • The Active Network Ports settings of Network preferences lets you change the priority of network port configurations, turn each port configuration on or off, create additional configurations that use the same ports as existing configurations, rename port configurations, and delete port configurations.

  • Network locations facilitate making regular changes to network settings. Each network location is one specific arrangement of all network settings. You can switch to any network location by choosing it from the Apple menu.

  • An AirPort base station can be a free-standing device or software running on an AirPort-equipped Mac. A base station lets all AirPort-equipped computers share an Internet connection, and it can bridge a wireless network and an Ethernet network. You set up either kind of base station with a setup assistant application.

  • You can share files between computers using the Bluetooth protocol.
