9.8 Summary

Wireless security is an area that has increased in importance as the popularity of wireless networks has increased. The current state of security within the 802.11 standard is insufficient, at best.

Network administrators have adopted other means of securing wireless networks, such as RADIUS authentication and VPN encryption, to bypass the weak security protection associated with the 802.11 standard. These methods of security provide the protection necessary for an enterprise network.

The 802.11i working group is actively developing better security protection for wireless networks. Some of the security protections will be backward compatible with existing systems; other standards, like AES, will require new equipment.

Wireless networks will continue to evolve at a rapid pace. Learning from earlier mistakes, vendors will undoubtedly ensure that tight security standards are in place within these new wireless protocols.
