This lesson discusses several features of the file systems on your Mac OS X computer.

First, this lesson describes how to format, partition, and repair disk drives. You will look at drive configuration and the file system layout after installing Mac OS X. You will then contrast the underlying files installed on the disk with how the Finder displays these files, and review how the file system uses search paths.

After learning about the file system, you will explore how users interact with the file system. This includes what's involved with naming and opening files, including the Finder mechanism that associates a file with applications that can open that file. You will explore file data and metadata, including how Spotlight searches for specific files. Finally, you'll learn about archives, packages, disk images, and burning folders to optical media.
