XML Encryption

XML Encryption offers a point-to-point security solution for applications that need to exchange structured data in a secure way; thus, this security standard is aimed at data exchange. This is one of the most important standards when it comes to application integration, because many companies leverage XML as a common format, and XML, being just text, must have some sort of security mechanism, or else the data is out there for all to see.

XML Encryption attempts to address areas that are not addressed by SSL, including the encryption part for the data being exchanged, and secure sessions between applications. Using this standard, each side of the exchange is able to maintain secure or insecure states as they exchange information, one to another; for example, exchanging XML-encrypted files that can be seen by one party but not the other. XML Encryption is not limited to just XML; it can also secure binary data.
