He does not stand on rock, but on shaky ground. Still it seems to hold his weight pretty well. Actually it is better this way: he can balance with a little effort and the environment keeps him alert. This is an excellent position for now, he thinks. Yet he knows he can't stay here long without losing his footing.
Far down the horizon there's still no sign of solid terrain, but he is not overly concerned. He believes there will eventually be a toehold if he keeps fighting his way forward. In spite of the haze, he is convinced he's heading in the right direction. What makes him really uneasy is the very next step. It is so close; it is so chancy.
