After you select the text for which you want to change the spacing between characters, open the Format menu and select Font to open the Font dialog box.
In the Character Spacing tab, click the down arrow next to the Spacing field and select either Expanded (to fill the page) or Condensed (to shorten the page).
In the By spin box next to the Spacing field, type 2pt. The Preview area shows how the character spacing will look; click OK.
The character-spacing setting is applied to the text on the page.
INTRODUCTION
Another way to solve the problem of needing to fill a page with text when you just can't think of anything more to write (or to condense the text if you've overshot your target) is to change the amount of space between characters. Word uses Normal character spacing by default, as opposed to Expanded or Condensed.
TIP
Kerning for Fonts
Notice the Kerning for Fonts option on the Character Spacing tab of the Font dialog box. Kerning enables you to adjust the space between two characters, creating the appearance of even spacing. For example, in the word illness, the i and both ls are narrow letters. When you apply kerning, these characters appear evenly spaced, rather than far apart.
