active cell

The selected cell in a worksheet. You can enter or edit text or data in the active cell.



absolute cell reference

An entry in a formula that does not change when the formula is copied to a new cell. In certain formulas, you might want an entry to always refer to one specific cell value.



active document

The document currently selected in the application you're using.



active window

In a multiple-window environment, it's the window you are currently using or that is currently selected. Only one window can be active at a time, and keystrokes and commands affect the active window.



adaptive menu

A menu that changes to show the commands you use most often.



alignment

The way text lines up against the margins of a page. For example, justified text lines up evenly with both the left and right margins.



animation effect

An illusion of movement during a PowerPoint slideshow that is accomplished by controlling how text is displayed.



attachment

A file you attach to an Outlook item. For example, you might attach a worksheet to an email message and send the message and file to a co-worker.



AutoContent wizard

A tool in PowerPoint that guides you through the steps of a proposed presentation and includes suggested content.



AutoCorrect

A feature that corrects spelling errors as you type. You can also use AutoCorrect to enter particular phrases automatically.



AutoText

A feature that automatically corrects mistyped text. You can also use AutoText to specify a string of characters that will automatically correct itself to a word or phrase. For example, Word comes with AutoText that automatically corrects "teh" to "the."
