Summary

This chapter examined the network management implications for both the enterprise and a service provider when an MPLS VPN is introduced.

The conclusion is that from an enterprise perspective, management should be considerably simplified, mainly due to the connectionless nature of IP VPNs and the fact that site-to-site routing is accounted for by the service provider. However, because IP is now the end-to-end protocol, this brings in other considerations and requires changes to monitoring policies and traffic classification to ensure correct treatment throughout the service provider network.

From a service provider perspective, provisioning, fault, and performance management all require specific strategies and tools. A key point is the need to monitor the data plane of both the VPN and MPLS. To help achieve this, service providers should work closely with vendors to ensure that they provide the latest instrumentation in their equipment and building management systems to use and build on this capability.
