Timex Bodylink System
Let's look at each component separately, starting with the Ironman Triathlon Bodylink Performance Monitor sport watch. In addition to normal watch functions (with INDIGLO night light), you get a 100-hour chronograph with lap/split, 100-lap memory, 100-hour countdown timer, and alerts for targeted heart rate zone, pace, speed, and distance. It's not a small watch, but then you need a little space for all these sensors and a big readout. The Timex Speed + Distance Sensor is actually a GPS tracking device, using Navman II technology. It's small enough to clip on your belt or wear on the included arm strap, and uses GPS technology to track your position and pace. It measures real-time, average, and maximum speed; calculates pace, average pace, and best pace; and tracks total distance for a single workout or group of workouts. The Timex Digital Heart Rate Sensor straps around your chest to provide continuous heart rate readings. It sends signals to the data recorder via FM signals and isn't affected by exercise equipment or other electronic devices. All of this information comes together in the Timex Data Recorder. It not only tracks the recorded data in real-time, you can also connect it to your PC (via USB) to upload the data to the Timex Trainer software. The software creates a variety of reports and graphs to help you track your progress over time. Bottom line, this is an extremely high-tech system for tracking your running and workout performance. Use the information gathered to help fine-tune your workouts and to improve your performance.
Garmin Forerunner 301Garmin's Forerunner 301 is another performance monitoring system, this time in a single compact device (plus a separate chest-strap heart rate monitor, of course). You wear the Forerunner 301 on you wrist, and it monitors heart rate, speed, distance, pace, and calories burned. The embedded GPS sensor provides basic navigation capabilities, so you won't get lost on long runs. Recorded information is uploaded to your PC into Garmin's Training Center software, for further analysis.
Navman Sport Tool R300Navman's Sport Tool R300 is a neat-looking little triangle of a device that uses GPS technology to measure speed, distance, and pace. It also calculates current, maximum, and average speeds and offers target zone monitoring with an acoustic alarm. Best of all, the Sport Tool is small enough to fit on an arm strap.
Nike Triax Speed 100 Super SpeedometerNike's Triax Speed 100 is a low-cost sport watch and performance monitor for runners. It lets you set target times then monitors your actual performance; you can then review how your performance compares to your goals. It includes a 100-lap chronograph and five-segment interval timer and tracks lap time, total time, best lap, average lap, and target time differentials.
Polar S625X Running ComputerThe Polar S626X is a sport watch with built-in running computer. It includes automatic lap recording and monitors speed, pace, and distance. Even better, it includes a wireless heart rate monitor so you can track maximum, minimum, and average heart rate during your run and for each individual lap. Information is transferred to your PC via an infrared connection.
