Summary

CPE is any hardware that is physically located at a customer site. For example, each of the following is considered CPE: servers, workstations, communication hardware (CSU/DSUs, modems), LAN equipment (hubs, bridges, switches), and WAN equipment (routers).

Servers refer both to the hardware and software or just the software that performs the service, as FTP. Workstation refers to any LAN host (computer) that enables a user to interface with LAN resources.

Before a LAN can connect to a network service provider's access line, a CSU/DSU or multiplexer must be used on both ends of the access line (one by the customer and the other by the network service provider).

For analog service, such as low-speed asynchronous lines (such as those used with radio relay or voice automatic ring-down services), you must perform an A-D conversion. Because analog signals (such as voice) cannot be transmitted directly over a digital network, modems are required to perform both the A-D conversion from the sending side and the D-A conversion on the receiving side of the line.
