w.bloggar

w.bloggar is a free weblog client for Windows available from www.wbloggar.com. We used version 4 Full Setup for Mozilla in writing this chapter.

To set w.bloggar posting preferences

1.

Open w.bloggar. If you have never set up an account before, the w.bloggar Add Account Wizard is displayed.

2.

Select the Yes, I want to add it as a new account radio button to add an existing blog (Figure 43). Click the Next button.

Figure 43. The w.bloggar Add Account Wizard steps you through the setup process for w.bloggar.

3.

Set the options in the Content Management System window (Figure 44):

  • Blog Tool: choose WordPress.

  • Account Alias: enter a memorable name, for example, it could be the name of your blog.

  • Ping: turn on the check box if you wish to notify a service such as Technorati when you make a post. Use the pop-up to choose a service to notify.

  • Use Proxy Server: turn this check box on if you know you use a proxy server. Most users are unlikely to need this. If you're unsure, consult your Internet service provider.

Figure 44. Choose WordPress as the Blog Tool and give your account a name.

4.

Click the Next button.

5.

Complete the details in the Account Connection Settings window (Figure 45):

  • Host: enter the address for your blog, without the http:// protocol. For example: www.firstbite.co.nz or wpvqs.wordpress.com.

  • Path: is the address for the xmlrpc file. Start this address with a slash, for example: /xmlrpc.php. If you installed your blog in a sub-directory on your own server, include that sub-directory name here, for example: /vqs/xmlrpc.php.

Figure 45. Enter the address for the blog and the path to the xmlrpc file. My blog is in the vqs subdirectory so the Path begins with /vqs.

6.

Click the Next button. The Account User and Password window is displayed.

7.

Enter your User name and Password. If you do not wish to enter your password each time you use w.bloggar then turn on the Save Password check box. Click the Finish button (Figure 46).

Figure 46. Enter the username and password.

8.

The Wizard closes, the settings for posting text are saved, and the New Post window is displayed.

9.

Choose Tools > Options to set the HTML preferences to use XHTML. The Options dialog box opens.

10.

Click the Code Editor tab.

11.

Turn on the Use XHTML Compatible Tags check box (Figure 47):

12.

Click the OK button. The dialog box closes and the settings are saved.

Tip

  • WordPress blogs use XHTML. Using code from HTML 4 and earlier will cause your blog to be invalid, which may cause problems for some visitors.

  • User: enter your user name for connecting via FTP to the server.

  • Password: enter your password for connecting via FTP to the server.

  • URL to Link: if you upload images and other files with w.bloggar, this is the address that will be used in the HTML of the post for linking to the files; for example, http://example.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/.

Figure 48. Enter the FTP server address, username and password so you'll be able to upload files.

5.

To add a file or image to a post

1.

Open w.bloggar and create a new post or edit an existing post.

2.

Place the cursor where you wish the file to be inserted.

3.

Choose Tools > Upload File. The Upload File dialog box is displayed.

4.

To upload a file from your computer click the dots at the end of the File text field (Figure 57). The Open dialog is displayed.

Figure 57. Click the button beside the File field to call up the Open dialog box.

5.

Choose the file to upload from your computer and click the Open button. The Upload File dialog box is displayed showing the path to the local file.

6.

Choose what should be inserted:

  • Image on the post: turn this on for images.

  • Link to the file: turn this on for other files.

  • Edit the Tag before insert: turn this on to edit the HTML before it is inserted into the post. We recommend you leave this off. If you turn it on w.bloggar allows you to add a title to an image but does not include any alt text. Since the rules of HTML require alt text you will then have to add alt text manually.

7.

Click the Upload button (Figure 58). The file is uploaded to the server and the link or image coding is added to the post.

Figure 58. Clicking the upload button sends the file to the server and adds the image code or link text to the post.

8.

Edit image alt text and file link text to meet best practice requirements (Figure 59).

Figure 59. I've edited the inserted link and image code to make my blog more useful for visitors. This edited post is ready to be sent to the server.

9.

When you have finished editing choose Tools > Post & Publish (Figure 51). An alert confirms that the post was successful (Figure 56).

10.

Click OK. The alert is dismissed and a New Post window opens.
