Plugins

Plugins are special files that make it easy to add extra functions and features to your server-installed WordPress blog. They include PHP code that adds functions or perform other tasks. Some work their magic simply by being activated, while others also require you to edit files, modify posts, or carry out other actions.

For example, a plugin may trap comment spam, show post headlines from other blogs, or display all the photos you've uploaded. There are hundreds of plugins available to you in dozens of categories.

In this chapter we explain how to activate and deactivate plugins and, if necessary, set plugin options. We also show you some plugins we find particularly useful.

Tips

  • You can find links to lists of plugins at codex.wordpress.org/Plugins (Figure 1). Appendix A includes additional resources for finding plugins.

Figure 1. The Plugins page in the WordPress Codex provides additional information about plugins, as well as links to plugin repositories.

  • Plugins can be added to WordPress server installations only, so if you have a WordPress.com blog, this chapter won't provide much useful information for youexcept some good reasons to run your own WordPress installation!
