Special Text

Microsoft Word's Insert menu (Figure 1) includes a number of commands that you can use to insert special text into your documents:

Figure 1. The Insert menu.

  • AutoText submenu commands enable you to create and insert AutoText entries, which are commonly used text snippets, such as your name or the closing of a letter.

  • Field enables you to insert Word fields, which are pieces of information that change as necessary, such as the date, file size, or page number.

  • Date and Time inserts a date or time field than can automatically update to reflect the current date or time.

  • Page Numbers inserts a page number field on each page of the document. When viewed onscreen or printed, the field indicates the number of the page on which it appears.

  • Symbol enables you to insert symbols and special characters such as bullets, smiley faces, and the registered trademark symbol (®).

  • File enables you to insert another file into your document.
