Inserting & Deleting Cells

You can insert or remove columns, rows, or individual cells at any time to change the structure of a table.

To insert a column

1.

Select a column adjacent to where you want to insert a column (Figure 43).

To insert a column to the left of the selected column, choose Table > Insert > Columns to the Left (Figure 44) or click the Insert Columns button on the Standard toolbar.

To insert a column to the right of the selected column, choose Table > Insert > Columns to the Right (Figure 44).

An empty column is inserted (Figure 45).

Tip

  • To insert multiple columns, select the same number of columns that you want to insert (if possible) in step 1 or repeat step 2 until the number of columns that you want to insert has been inserted.


To insert a row

1.

Select a row adjacent to where you want to insert a row (Figure 46).

2.

insert a row above the selected row, choose Table > Insert > Rows Above (Figure 44) or click the Insert Rows button on the Standard toolbar.

To insert a row below the selected row, choose Table > Insert > Rows Below (Figure 44).

An empty row is inserted (Figure 47).

Tips

  • Another way to insert a row at the bottom of the table is to position the insertion point in the last cell of the table and press . An empty row is inserted (Figure 48).

  • To insert multiple rows, select the same number of rows that you want to insert (if possible) in step 1 or repeat step 2 until the number of rows that you want to insert has been inserted.


To insert a cell

1.

Select the cell at the location where you want to insert a cell (Figure 49).

Choose Table > Insert > Cells (Figure 44) or click the Insert Cells button on the Standard toolbar.

3.

In the Insert Cells dialog that appears (Figure 50), select an option:

  • Shift cells right inserts a cell in the same row and moves the cells to its right to the right (Figure 51a).

  • Shift cells down inserts a cell in the same column and moves the cells below it down (Figure 51b).

  • Insert entire row inserts a row above the selected cell.

  • Insert entire column inserts a column to the left of the selected cell.

4.

Click OK.

Tip

  • To insert multiple cells, select the same number of cells that you want to insert (if possible) in step 1 or repeat steps 2 and 3 until the number of cells that you want to insert has been inserted.


To delete a column, row, or cell

1.

Select the column (Figure 52), row (Figure 55), or cell (Figure 57) that you want to remove.

Choose the appropriate command from the Table menu's Delete submenu (Figure 53) to delete the selected column, row, or cell.

If you delete a column, it disappears and the columns to its right shift to the left (Figure 54).

If you delete a row, it disappears and the rows below it shift up (Figure 56).

If you delete a cell, choose an option in the Delete Cells dialog that appears (Figure 58):

  • Shift cells left deletes the cell and moves the cells to its right to the left (Figure 59a).

  • Shift cells up deletes the cell and moves the cells below it up (Figure 59b).

  • Delete entire row deletes the row.

  • Delete entire column deletes the column.

    Then click OK.

Tips

  • The contents of a column, row, or cell are deleted with it.

  • You can select multiple contiguous columns, rows, or cells in step 1 above to delete them all at once.
