Notebook Layout View

Notebook Layout view (Figure 1) is a Macintosh-only feature that is brand new in Word 2004. With "pages" that resemble a ruled notebook, Notebook Layout view is designed to make it easy to take notes and write down your thoughts quickly, in a free-form style that's easy to organize.

Figure 1. Notebook Layout view, with some notes.

In Notebook Layout view, you enter text using an outline-like note structure. You type a note at the top level, then add notes beneath it in indented sublevels. Like Outline view, you can collapse or expand note levels to hide or display details.

In Notebook Layout view, your notes aren't limited to what you can type. You can use the Scribble tool to draw images. You can also use tools on the Audio Notes toolbar to record and play audio notes in a document.

Notebook Layout view includes a few unique organizational tools. For example, you can create named page tabs that identify groups of notes. You can also flag notes for future action or insert check boxes beside notes to check off items for whatever reason you want.

This chapter explains how to get started using Notebook Layout view to take notes with Word.

Tip

  • I tell you about Word's Outline view in Chapter 12. Because Notebook Layout view and Outline view have some similarities, you may find it helpful to read Chapter 12 before continuing with this chapter.
