DECEMBER 07

Star or middle of the road, during the holidays, they’re one and the same.

TREATING THEM EQUALLY

If you are in charge of the official company gift, make sure gift giving is equitable.

Holiday gifts are not to be mistaken for performance awards—where the best employees get the best rewards. Nor should they be confused with cash bonuses—where some people will certainly have earned more than others. The message of a corporate holiday gift is that everyone in the organization is important to our collective success.

That doesn’t mean everyone must receive the same gift, but all gifts should be of equivalent value.

In the event that management insists on doing something special for senior-level leaders or star performers, make sure those gifts are sent to their homes. Otherwise, word of the inequity will spread like melted butter on warm yams, and you’ll end up looking like a turkey. Is anyone else getting hungry?
