Gather the elements for recognition.
A leading women’s retailer, with about 1,000 stores around North America, was having problems with high turnover. Managers wanted to correct the problem but felt they had few tools in their arsenal to retain good employees.
A human resources associate developed a manager’s recognition tool kit with a book on recognition (by a couple of guys we love), a stack of thank-you cards with envelopes, and a checkbook of fifty notes of appreciation. Managers greeted this simple tool with a standing ovation.
Today, any associate can reward a colleague by ripping off a note of appreciation from the store’s checkbook. Bulletin boards are mounted in every store so employees can display the notes from peers. By the same token, managers are supplied with thank-you cards and encouraged to use them liberally.
